Portrait of a Woman by Domenico Ghirlandaio
Women were represented with great and accurate detail by the Florentine
Renaissance painters, including Domenico Ghirlandaio. Born in 1449,
this contemporary of Botticelli had numerous apprentices, among them
Michelangelo. His women were elegant and representative of the period,
as were their hairstyles. Employed by Pope Sixtus IV, the artist worked
on numerous religious themes, but it was his portraits of contemporaries
that helped to define the character of the age.
