The hairstyle pictured here occurs at the period just before the
Victorian era, when Queen Victoria was at the greatest influnce on the
world of fashion. The hair is dark and elegant with many of the later
Edwardian effects (flowers and fruit in the hair). During the period
between now and a hundred years later, hair was be dark, austere, and
the clothing much like a mourning dress. When Queen Victoria was to
lose her beloved Prince Albert, she went into a lifetime of mourning and
all who gathered around her respectfully imitated the sad queen. This
woman from the early nineteenth century still shows life and loveliness,
but there is just a hint of the darker years to come. She has added the
life of flowers to hair to demonstrate her own capacity to bring forth
life, despite a veil of sadness that appears to intrude upon her visage.
