This photography is of a young woman with the classic hair of the period
just before the American Civil War. The hairstyles were simple as times
were difficult and women chose an appearance that was both safe and
functional. There was work to be done, and no time for frivolous
activities. There might be a few parties and social events, but for the
purpose of a photograph that was destined to grace the mantlepiece in a
moral and God-fearing home, it was best to represent oneself as upright
and educated. She has chosen to wear her best jewelry and her loved
ones have shown her the respect of colorizing the black and white
daguerreotype, to give it just a hint of life.
