Slaves who had been freed or whose freedom had been purchased had equal
opportunity to become well-to-do members of society. This rare
daguerreotype of a woman of mixed race shows her beauty and her
elegance. She lacks the hairdo of what might be categorized as
nobility, but her dress says that she comes from a well-to-do family.
She has chosen a style for her hair that is without style. She does not
proclaim that she is a member of the established society, while at the
same time, she has broken free from any shackles that may have
constrained her family. In essence, she has invented a new hairstyle
that is simple and suitable. A pink glow has been added to her cheeks
to emphasize her youth, and her expression shows the composure and
confidence of the daughter of a successful businessman.
