The woman's hairdo is intriguing as it combines two uplifted styles. She
has more than merely posed for a CDV (Carte de Visite), as she has
chosen to have her presence recorded for posterity. She knew that the
photograph would outlive her, and she had to be the best she could. The
collar and the lace proclaim her to be possibly the wife of a reverend.
Regardless, she is of high-standing within her society. The hairstyle
appears to be unique, though it may be characteristic of specific
location and period of time. It is a precursor of the wedding updos
that would eventually become standard for brides well into the twentieth
century.
